Elasticsearch vs OpenSearch : Best Explainer Video

The Best, Simplest Video on Elasticsearch vs OpenSearch

In early 2021, on the heels of a major licensing change by Elastic, Amazon announced the OpenSearch project, a code branch of Elasticsearch and Kibana under the Apache 2.0 open-source license. We wrote a 3-part blog series from the User point-of-view, Elastic point-of-view, and Amazon Point of View.

These blogs were well read and received, and we got some kudos for being straightforward and neutral in our writing.

Well, things continue to heat up in Elasticsearch vs. OpenSearch and we thought that it could be inconvenient to try to read all the blogs.  Some people don’t have the time, or simply prefer their content in a visual format.

After scouring the internet for video content, we found some examples of basic training on OpenSearch, and some technical reviews. But one video stood out for its simplicity in explaining this open source search engine war. And that was the video below by Andrew Quinn on the Pro Tech channel on YouTube. We appreciated Andrew’s clear presentation style, sprinkled with a bit of humor.

Like our blog series, Andrew looks at the situation from various points of view. He also does a nice job of explaining how licensing models like Server-Side Public License (SSPL) play a role in the back and forth between Elastic and AWS.

If you like the content, be sure to subscribe to Andrew’s channel.
