The Quest for Enterprise Search Excellence
I had the pleasure recently of presenting a brief Keynote at KMWorld Connect 2021, attended by close to a thousand search and knowledge management experts.
In the presentation, I tried to demystify AI technologies like machine learning, natural language processing and knowledge graphs and explain how they are used for query understanding, extractive answers from text, and exact answers from curated knowledge graphs.
It’s a straightforward formula to deliver a better enterprise search experience, which can be boiled down to “Make it Work Like Google.” This simple phrase defines what enterprise search users want today, driven by their experience with Google and other popular applications like AirBnB, Amazon Prime Video, and Waze, to name a few.
It’s easy to be intimidated by AI, so at Pureinsights we work with you to simplify how these technologies can be deployed to different search use cases and applications. We also developed the concept of SearchOps as a means to keep those applications running at peak performance.

Dr. Tracey Wilen, author of Digital Disruption, spoke just before my keynote and described how companies that make bold moves to attack business problems in different ways often succeed much more than those who don’t. I also noted that there were a lot more sessions at KMWorld this year where machine learning or knowledge graphs were central to the presentation. I think this confirms my view that this is the time to look at AI technologies in enterprise search.
